- Anke Eckardt

Anke Eckardt creates a story about language, communication, and social connection between two places in the city: the boat rental at Dutzendteich in the old Nazi Party Rally Grounds in the east, and the Heizhaus, a former fire station in the west. Animal bodies that speak in human language have fun on the weekend – but are they really just having fun, or are they performing for us? Who is performing for whom? Slowly, they become stressed and fall apart until they are rescued. On the other side of the city, in a safe indoor space, a group of the rescued creatures come together. They breathe softly and remember who they are, what happened, and what they can become. From sounds, images, and memories of early cave drawings mixed with futuristic ideas, a new world forms through sound and visuals, in which these beings communicate with each other - without the boundaries and concepts that human language imposes on them.
Anke Eckardt is a media and sound artist. In her work, she often looks at communication and politics. She explores the delicate connections between individual and group identity, examines power dynamics, and studies how materials are used, especially with new technologies. In her multimedia and sound installations, as well as her sculptures, she combines sound with light, physical materials, architecture, movement, text, and new media. She is interested in how these different elements can work together, creating both connections and breaks. She lives in Graz and is a professor of fine arts at the University of Art and Design Graz.
